We are showing the anime movie Tekkonkinkreet Saturday night 5.31.2008 around 10pm, down at The Shoppe, as part of Postmans May movie series. This is the last movie from Postmans selections, and one of my new favs! Regardless if you can make it down or not on Saturday, I would still highly recommend putting this one into the Netflix cue or stopping by your local movie store to pick it up. The art direction and illustration style really stood out in this film when compared to most anime… the lines are a bit looser and the overall tone of the movie has a gritty, vintage feel to it.

I’m not usually down to spew out the same old content everyone else does. Not that every design blog regurgitates the same shit over and over again, copying, borrowing and stealing content from each other, but lately I’ve noticed it’s becoming more of a trend than writing your own stuff. In light of the whole, not yet a problem type situation, I’ve selected a few sites that I’ve come to enjoy. I’ll share them in short, not because someone else thinks it worth a mention, but because I really like them and they influence me in one way or another. Someone somewhere is probably writing about them but I don’t give a shit if they are. So there.
The first site is a more recent one, NOLAF for Frito Lay done by Element79. I think it perfectly exemplifies a viral site and puts the rest of the shitty half assed “viral” marketing attempts to shame. Beautifully written, shot well, very user friendly and most importantly gives me a chuckle. I like it when a company can laugh at themselves a little bit. The next site is the IAD08 site. I like throwback and this site hits it on the head. There is a lot of other great shit about it, but I’ll let you jump in to see it for yourself. Really quickly the others ones are the WDDG site, which has been a fav since like 02. The last site I’ve come across recently is that of Mekanism. I’m pretty sure they had some involvement in the NOLAF site as well. Ill hit you with more info on all of these sites later on in detail but for now, take a peek and get wise to it. Good stuff.

It looks like there is going to be a huge group show at the Thorp Building tonight. It looks as though there will be art from more than 15 artists. (Sample above is Greg Gossel.) We will most definitely swing by as say something clever, take a few pics, drink a PBR (please be some tasty beverage for my oral delight) say hello to some art and bye to the crowd. Meet us there, we can thumb wrestle. No website for the Thorp Building I know of, so look at the map and drive there like they did in the 80’s.

Scientists are looking to create alternatives to the international food and oil crisis by engineering “self-digesting” plants. These plants would aid in the refining process and would most likely be inedible. I’m interested to see if this gets off the ground and where it might take us… For more info on this check out the NewScientist blog.

John Fellows and Kris Fry have been working on some super fun stuff over the past two months… and it sounds like they are going to be cranking out work up until the day of the show. Kris dropped me a line and said they’ll have a healthy amount of silk screen posters, lino cuts, drawings, and even a tasty zine available this Saturday down at the Plastic Chapel on East Colfax for the reception of their collaborative show In Cahoots.
John and Kris are both super nice guys & really talented creatives… plus Dea & Dave from the Plastic Chapel are just plain rad!… Come out and show some of the nicest and talented people involved in the Denver art/design community some love!!!

Looks like record label Ghostly International and Adult Swim have hooked up to colloborate on Ghostly Swim. It’s a music compliation featuring artists From Ghostlys’ line up. You can download the entire album for free from the Ghostly Swim microsite!
Also make sure to check out the BoyCatBird trio who make an appearance in the double feature music video for Triple Chrome Dipped by Michna which blends into the Night Court track by Mux Mool. As always good stuff from the Ghostly crew!

I don’t know what I’m really about to write… I think I’ll make this stream of consciousness… As of this very moment I feel completely unmotivated. I can’t seem to solve the most simple problem on one design. An illustration. Thats all. I feel like this problem goes a little deeper than just this project, I don’t think that it has anything to do with… I don’t know, I think it might actually be because I’m inside, at home all fucking day, working, creating, thinking, reading. I usually do good with this but lately, it’s been kicking my ass. We were at the screening for Beautiful Losers the other day. It was an awesome documentary. Everyone who isn’t cool should go see it. I’ve seen Aaron Rose like 4 times around Minneapolis and yeah… We also went to Chris Johanson’s show at some gallery on Nicollet. It was odd. Kinda fun, but odd. Aaron, Chris & Jo were there, I wasn’t sure if they were tired or just sort of chillin. I think the art scene here is totally different than in Denver. It seems to be more of a thing for your friends and if you aren’t a homie you are sort of that weird person who nobody knows that showed up… I haven’t been able to feel totally involved in it yet, but I think it’s kind of uncomfortable still, to go. I feel like I need to draw more. Maybe that will help. I want more coffee, and can’t seem to enjoy much if any of my own music lately. I wonder if I’m dying…? No of course not. It’s all imaginary, it’s a subconscious excuse to be lazy… maybe it’s nothing. Shit. Ass-clown.. Thats a rad word. Well, I guess I’ll go make some more coffee and try to eat enough to go for longer on this whole creative spurt I’m not having. Poop.

I was cruising around Benny Gold’s blog a few weeks back and on there I stumbled across a link to Speakeasy on Broadway, a new clothing boutique here in Denver that carries his line… Along with a handful of other established and up and coming brands including: Crooks and Castles, Manik, Stussy, Mash, The Hundreds, In4mation…. Honestly the list just keeps going. Basically all the dope shit you see in vapors, juxtapoz, swindle, XLR8R, or on tasty design blogs just like this one!… You now have the opportunity to peep in real life, and unlike the internets…. You now have the chance to try some of that creative driven gear on. No more are the days of ordering an XXL that fits like mesh half shirt or vice versa, no more dropping your hard earned lootcakes an a herion chic XS and receiving a shirt that could double as a fucking tent!… all thanks to Speakeasy on Broadway!!!
