Crawlspace at Black Book Gallery

March 31st, 2011

Two of my favorite Colorado artists / people, husband and wife duo Jeremy Pruitt (THINKMULE™) and Melanie Pruitt (Deadly Daisy) will be showing new works this Friday as part of their show titled Crawlspace, which runs April 1st through April 29th at The Black Book Gallery here in Denver.

Melanie will be showing a fresh round of highly intricate black & white ink drawings inspired by the human form and organic patterns, Jeremy will provide a nice balance with his bold, layered, type and folk inspired sculpture work. I get geeked out every time these two show new work in public, notoriously reclusive, it’s always a treat to see how they explore and evolve as artists.

Crawlspace at Black Book Gallery opens April 1st @ 7PM : 555 Santa Fe Dr. Denver, Colorado 80204

Michael Wolff on Creativity

March 29th, 2011

Listening to Michael Wolff (Wolff Olins) talk about creativity as he makes tea or goes on a walk in the rain, is quite the perfect way to capture his decades of experience in a few short moments; intricacies and all.

If you haven’t seen it, check out the Intel Visual Life profile video for the Sartorialist, that we posted, a month or so back.

Rosario Florio

March 21st, 2011

Rosario Florio‘s work has a kind of dry fun to it, that I find interesting. It fits into a very form based, design-thinking that I’ve grown increasingly fond of over the years. I’ve sort of unintentionally learned to embrace it within my own work, without any clear indication of why… Regardless, Rosario’s collection of projects possess a certain quality, that I’ve come to thoroughly enjoy, in Design, as of late; specifically her FWD Grotesk typeface.

The Black Mamba

February 19th, 2011

I’m not into sports or advertising, at all… but I couldn’t help sharing this swell piece Robert Rodriguez recently did for Nike. Turning the product into a hero is a pretty traditional approach in advertising, but I think that this example does a great job, to both, inspire and engage.

IFC Rebrand

February 16th, 2011

IFC (Independent Film Channel) recently revealed their brilliant new logo, created by Portland based, Feel Good Anyway. The rebrand showcases a new direction packed with a great deal of wit and explores some interesting concepts for its use in print, online and for television.

Check out the project in its entirety on Feel Good Anyway‘s site, and some humorous feedback on the rebrand, on Brand New.

Changethethought Seeking Interns

February 6th, 2011

Alright Denver kiddies, I don’t necessarily condone the unpaid, anything route… But, knowing how hard it can be to get into the Denver creative community, I figured it doesn’t hurt to spread the word.

Changethethought is looking for two unpaid interns for 12 weeks. It sounds like their open to full time or part time and are looking to fill a Motion Designer position and a Producer position. For more information on what they’re looking for, jump over to the original post on CTT.

123klan Reel

February 6th, 2011

Our friends, the 123KLAN, never seem to stop being creative. Check out their nifty, new demo reel… I think it does a great job capturing that same energy and simplicity that their V1 site did, all those years ago.

Frank Chimero – The Shape of Design

February 3rd, 2011

Recently, Portland designer / illustrator / teacher, Frank Chimero posted a pitch on Kickstarter for a new book he’s working on, titled The Shape of Design. If you aren’t familiar with the Kickstarter format; it’s basically a project funding platform that utilizes small contributions with promise of a piece of the action in return. Each level of contribution is rewarded with something in return if the project meets its funding requirements. It’s a clever system and has been incredibly successful in the short time it’s been running.

Where it gets really interesting, is when we start to talk about how much money is being raised and in what period of time. As an example, Frank raised $30,000 in less than one day. $30K IN LESS THAN ONE DAY. He’s somewhere near the 55K mark after three or four days, and still has 27 or so, left, to raise more. With these sorts of examples, it’s hard to imagine why we have any issues in this country what-so-ever.

Pablo Ferro

February 3rd, 2011

Over the past 50 years, Pablo Ferro has done title treatments for more than 90 films and is considered by some, to be the father of motion graphics. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until recently that realized how many pictures he’s done the titles for or that it was his work I was looking at.

Some notable films include, Dr. Strangelove, Bullitt, A Clockwork Orange, Beetle Juice, Good Will Hunting, Pump Up the Volume, Darkman, The Addams Family, Men in Black, Napoleon Dynamite…

GestaltenTV – Erik Spiekermann

February 1st, 2011

We recently had the opportunity to hear Erik Spiekermann lecture at a Typekit event here in San Francisco. Although I’ve only caught bits of commentary from Spiekermann in films like Gary Hustwit‘s Helvetica, seeing him in person and getting an up close impression of his character and wisdom, made for an interesting and educational experience.

Take a peek at his recent conversation with Gestalten TV.

Josh Holland – The Process

January 29th, 2011

Josh Holland shares quite a few sneak peeks of work, on his Twitter page, but it’s hard to forecast the outcome or imagine the amount of effort he puts into a single piece, until you see it all at once.

Check out Josh’s blog for additional pics of the various stages, process related notes and more info on the project itself.

Giant Robot – Famicom Scion xb

January 11th, 2011

It’s always nice to see the reinterpretation of something as utility-based as a car. Eric Nakamura‘s recent project with Len Higa of Oni Motorworks, is a great example of the power of recontextualization. Their 8 Bit inspired, Scion XB, matches the imagination of video games with a sort of whimsical look at the future of automotive fashion.

For more information on the video game in the car, check out Returnofthequack.com
