We found out that one of the two partners, Jon Forss, had moved to St Paul from their London HQ, just a year before we moved to MPLS. The motivational impact the Non Format mystique generated was enough to keep anyone inspired, but to find out they had an office in proximity to your own was pretty great. Aside from that and some familiarity with their work, we didn’t really know a ton about them or their operating procedure. Needless to say, we both thought it was a great lecture and helped solidify some of the ulterior motives we’ve both been scheming on lately.
We also bumped into a slew of our internet homies in the flesh. Always great to meet up and slap fives. Joy.
Project Hello is an idea/event that has been manifested to provide a platform for Denver creatives to get together and rub elbows, slap skins, talk shop, and gather inspiration while exposing their work among peers. The event will also help foster and provide context for the community at large to unite, build, and shape a supportive artistic community in Denver. Project Hello will run for one day and will be curated in a “festival or salon” like setting at the TAXI building on May 1, 2010.
Less than two weeks away – Submission Deadline is March 1, 2010 to be considered for exhibition inclusion. Creatives of all shapes & sizes in various stages of artistic career & development are encouraged to submit. There are a few guidelines for submission, all interested should send the required info and content to projecthellodenver[at]gmail.com.
Matt Scobey just wrapped up an insightful interview with the gals behind Project Hello Sandra Fettingis & Louise Martorano which has been posted on the PH site for viewing pleasure. Sandra and Lisa shed some light on what you can expect from both submitting to and attending the event. The Project Hello crew has also worked up a Facebook page to keep us all in the know.
Cheers to Sandra, Lisa, and everyone else involved in helping bring this event to life…. I’ll be participating and look forward to seeing some radness and meeting some shiny new souls on May 1st!
Mike Swoop is throwing a release party for his New Love album, set to drop 02.02.2010. The event is February 5TH at Sauce in Uptown Minneapolis. Featured guest include Espada & Booka B. Rumor has it that there could be some special appearances as well.. more on that soon as I get word.
The 4th installation of Shoe Shine is dropping on Denver this Saturday. Jasmine Solano, MU$A, and a handful of special guests will be dropping notes, beats, and tunes on ear drums while visitors geek out on assorted visual goodness. Shoe Shine versions 1.o, 2.o, and 3.o have been more than noteworthy… 4.o will be one for the books. I would most definitely suggest making an appearance and sneaking in a few pelvic thrust uppercuts™ if possible.

The artist line up and location for ARTCRANK 2010 have been announced for the Minneapolis event. After talking to Charles on and off over the past few months it sounds like this year is going to be a huge step up in a couple of ways. One of the most definitive of those will be in the location of the opening night. This year ARTCRANK will be held at Shelter Studios in NE Minneapolis with about 3 times the original capacity. We’ll be seeing a slew of new faces in the show this time around as well (see below). I’m sure chiseling the list down to a reasonable size was an eronious task all by itself.
Artists include: Aaron Pumort • Aaron Shekey • Adam Brackney • Adam Turman • Aesthetic Apparatus • Allan Peters • Amy Campbell • Amy Jo • Angel Bomb • Andy Skoglund • Anthem Heart • Ben Levitz • Bjorn Christianson • Brian Hartley Sago • Briana Auel • Broken Crow • Chelsea Brink • DWITT • Elizabeth Mullen • Erik Anthony Hamline • Gregory Hubacek • Jennifer Davis • Jessica Hall Burns • Johnny Slocum • Joseph Duffy • Katherine Lamm • Kelly Munson • Lovely Mpls • Lure Design • Maranatha Wilson • Paul Gardner • Rob Angermuller • Ross Bruggink • Scott Agrimson • Scott Neff • Spencer Haugh • Tara Costello • Tonja Torgerson • Zara Gonzalez
Opening Night Party: Saturday, April 10
7:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
I’ve been waiting to catch one of Tonja’s shows since I’ve moved to Minneapolis and finally…voila. Sick opens at XYandZ on Friday, January 22nd 7PM.
“Sick includes five life-sized self-portraits on paper. These paintings analyze the altering identity of a young woman learning to live with a permanent illness. Sick presents the personal side of what is becoming an ever-increasingly political issue through a girlish lens of soft aesthetic and sad whimsy. These paintings focus on the revision of self that accompanies illness. In addition, the exhibition consists of several smaller screen prints and works of mixed media. Sick creates an engaging fusion of feminism, craft, printmaking and street-art.”
After a period of considerable debate and frustration, I present to you, a sneak peek of my pieces for Duplicate of a Duplicate coming up next week at Black Sheep in NC. I’m probably making it all sound way worse than it was, but being so used to doing brief based work and having a finite solution to most of the projects I have, I struggled a bit trying to pump these out. I have a bad habit of redoing drawings and fiddling with colorways way too much for these sorts of art projects, plus I’m always trying to one up myself for some damn reason… BUT I think I’ve finally gotten a good grasp on an aesthetic I like and a good process with this set, that I’ll be able to work and evolve from here on out!
Stay posted for pics and additional information. If you are in NC and can make it to this show, please hit me back with any photos and / or glorious stories about the event.

From the sounds of those I know that made it to the show and the photos I’ve seen, it appears to have done really well. As you may or not already know, the Bordo Bello show is less than 2 weeks away and with the ever approaching deadline to finish and submit work, you get sneak peeks. Here is Josh’s peek at his delicious golden glory. Needless to say, Josh has been whoopin’ ace on a ton of artsy projects including his mural work over at Boulder Digital Works with Mike Scarano.
Celeste and I went on a quick adventure to check out the King Mini show Saturday at Pink Hobo. We were both happily satisfied with the array of affordable pieces and the genuine creative output on this one. Not that the previous shows haven’t been awesome as well, but I feel like this one had all the parts in the right places. The sculptural installation and the unfamiliar but very obvious choice of music, matched the tone of the art perfectly. The whole thing made me feel like I was looking at photos of a creepy little creature’s life. Very telling indeed.
Celeste and I were invited to participate in this year’s Bordo Bello event, an AIGA sponsored fundraiser to help support theYouth Design Denver program. Our friends at Cypher 13 and our BWLT collaborator, Josh “Dubs” Wills are also doing the show as well as a long list of other talented artists and designers. Make sure to check out the Bordo Bello site for more info.
The event is being thrown at Andenken Gallery, December 11 at 6PM. Take photos.
