Check Your Six

We recently got word from the chaps at Check Your Six Clothing about their Fall/Winter 2009 lookbook. After taking a quick peek I was refreshed to see some smashing original artwork and read about some of where they’re putting their focus. It’s nice to see these guys are getting some deserved placement not only here in Minneapolis at VS but in Florida, Texas & in Illinois at St Alfred. Pretty good start if I do say so my self. Keep em comin’ gents. Holler at us if you want a hand inking up some blanks. Yeh!

Fifth Element Sign

One of the finishing touches to any identity project or space redesign would be a sign. Saying that, I would like to share the new Fifth Element identity and sign for the shop on 24th & Hennepin here in Minneapolis. The sign went up a few weeks back and the space is being slowly being finished as the last few fixtures are being rolled in.
Aside from the identity redesign and space build out, they will be carrying the look/feel over to the online store as well. Which if rumor serves me right, is being hammered away on as we speak. For a quick peek at my proposed version of the site please swing over to the Lifter Baron site and check it out for yourself.

DOOMTREE Site Redesign
DOOMTREE‘s new site just went live last night and already seems to be getting a good response! I (Lifter Baron) had the chance to work with DOOMTREE in collaboration with Sevnthsin over the past couple months to work out some great additions and adaptations to their previous site as well as help the crew pro up their image a bit. They are using a handful of social apps and services to share info and promote shows, releases and merch. Underneath the clean aesthetic, we tied in all of those social media tools to easily update fans with minute to minute information and refreshes. We also built a mobile site and downloadable widget to get that content wherever you might be to make sharing simple. Flexibility and adaptation was the key factor in this whole project; and with time and use, the site will grow and evolve into an uber dynamic sharing tool for the group and their fans.
Pink Hobo – The Art of Yo Gabba Gabba Recap
Celeste and I took a quick adventure across the Mississippi to the NE side of Minneapolis to check out what the gentle people of Pink Hobo had up their sleeves this time. The venue has had some really great shows and there was no doubt that this one would have some interesting things to check peruse. We didn’t have much time to stick around and hi-five or slap ass, so we popped in, took some flicks, winked at the DJ and sneaked out the back. We had a 9:15 appointment to catch MOON so our mission was succinct. (Awesome by the way.) If you haven’t, make sure to pop in and take a peek for yourself. It’s most definitely worth a visit.

Favorite Sneakers
Lately, I’ve seen more than a handful of sneakers that I’ve quite thoroughly enjoyed and would love to eventually purchase. Take a quick look below and some of the swell footwear that is either in shops now, or soon to be released by various companies.

Clae – Russell (above)

Nike – Holiday 2009 Sweet Classic Low (above)

Creative Recreation – DiCoco in Black Patent (above)

Nike - Terminator Hi Jersey (above)

Nike – Summer 2009 Dunk Hi Splatter (above)

Nike – AM1 Hold Tight (above)
I find most of these gems on some super duper blogs such as Highsnobiety, Hypebeast or Sneaker Freaker. These sites cover a wide range of topics surrounding “urban” fashion, or streetwear. If you are in or around MPLS, check out VS Social Standard or Status. When I’m in Chicago, I usually hit up Saint Alfred or Leaders. When I roll through Denver, The 400 or Family Affair (Sorry if I left anyone out). These of course, aren’t the only places to read about or shop for sneakers but make me happy.
UNTITLED #20(TRIP) @ Denver Art Museum
UNTITLED #20(TRIP) at the Denver Art Museum video re-cap courtesy of Vincent Comparetto. A month or so back I was fortunate enough to pull a few screens with Rick Griffith & Matter, John Fellows, Scot LeFavor, Markham Maes, at the UNTITLED #20(TRIP) event. We formed “The Syndicate” and printed our asses off for a few magical hours combining the mystical forces of all our powers! I’m definitely hoping to work with all these talented cats again in one way or another sooner rather than later.

Soundset 2009

Soundset was pretty rad. We got to see some awesome performances (DOOM, Pharcyde, El-P & More), hang out with friends eat carnival food, drink beer out of plastic bottles and get a tan! On top of all of that, one of our very talented homies, Adam Garcia, did all of the identity and design for the event.
Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to work with the Rhymesayers guys on a handful of projects and was pretty excited to be able to go to something they put together on this scale. I heard that around 15,000 people showed up for the this year’s event which, needless to say, is a huge deal. Hopefully with more hard work and more top secret conversations, I’ll get a chance to be involved in next year’s Soundset.
Check out Soundset’s blog and Myspace for more info on the event as well as photos and video.

Objectified

As many of you may already know, Gary Hustwit just premiered his second design related documentary, Objectified. After seeing Helvetica (first film), it was without question that Objectified would, at a minimum, ask some really interesting questions around the topic and position itself in a way that it could openly inspire conversation. The film speaks directly to the relationship between manufactured objects and the people that create them. In some way, it had a lot of correspondence with how I feel about the work I do and even the decisions I have to make outside of “the office.” Overall, and maybe unintentionally, I think the film spoke most effectively to the modernized concern of necessity and the role some of these objects play in our lives. Its really kind of an interesting way to view the role of a designer when taking into consideration the responsibility as a median between those who want stuff, and those who attempt to provide it. Check out the Objectified site for list of those interviewed, a trailer and premier locations.
