Los Logos – Compass
The new Los Logos – Compass is the latest in the series of publications by Gestalten showcasing a gigantic selection of logos and identity systems from a collection of designers around the world — some of which include, our very own Celeste Prevost, Cypher13 and yours truly. Compass is a tiny bit different from the previous four Los Logos books, in that it’s taken on a more editorial direction; as opposed to page after page of logo on top of logo, you’ll get a little more information on process and so on.
Compass is set to hit the shelves early September for EU, mid September for UK, Asia, Australia, late September for US and Latin America.
Meomi

Meomi makes my insides tingle with joy every time I peek at their site. It’s sort of like a little adventure. Or, maybe it’s just that giant tree house with all the little critters poking their heads out and giggling. Love it either way.
No doubt they’ve been hard at work since I’ve last visited their site. They just recently released a new Octonauts book, “The Octonauts & the Great Ghost Reef,” which looks funtastic. They also seem to have an animated series in the oven. Nice!
Thanks for the heads up Amy!
C13 Interview in Advanced PS Magazine

Our close companions and creative allies in all things artsy, Cypher13, have recently been interviewed by Advanced Photoshop Magazine. The interview is in issue 63 but can be viewed on the JE blog as well.
Greg Gossel – “Broken” Recap
You can find Greg in an awesome retrospective on pop surrealism called EdgyCute. It’s full of some pretty amazing artists — just came out this September.
More info on Greg’s show at the SOO VAC site.
New Books

I’m not much for spending money on whatever, but when I see a good pair of sneakers or a book, it’s coming home with me. On my recent trip to Seattle / Portland I came across a multitude of options for both, sneakers and books resulting in a couple purchases here and there.
Pictured above left to right:
The Early Bird – The Art and Design of Morning Breath
Save my Life – Cody Hudson
(Both from Fifty 24SF Gallery in the Seattle Upper Playground shop)
(A zine by Jolby, grabbed at The Grass Hut in Portland)
Faesthetic #7
Nobrow Magazine no.1 – Gods & Monsters
EDTN. Magazine
(Also from Floating World Comics in Portland)
All of these are super good and have a wide array of artists and participants inside. Make sure to take a peek if you see any of them.
On a somewhat related side note, YWFT is having a huge sale on their book selection and some of these can be found there if you move like lightning.
We Are The Friction

We Are The Friction is a new book by Jez Burrows and Lizzy Stewart that marries illustrators with storymakers. The book is featuring some incredibly talented illustrators like Frank Chimero, Ray Fenwick, and Micah Lidberg and pairing them with equally talented authors. I def need to get my hand on this book asap. See more here and here. Available for purchase here.
Business Cards 3: Designs on Saying Hello

My soon to be famous wife (Celeste Prevost aka designisfine) and collaborative creative partner in crime has recently been awarded placement in a new business card book entitled Business Cards 3: Designs on Saying Hello. 272 pages of inspiration and somewhere near 1000 illustrations and designs, the 3rd in the series is just as, if not better than the first two. Make sure to check it out. Hi-five loverpants!
New Books

I’ve been slackin’ on getting books lately so I figured in celebration of slackin’ on other stuff, I’d go out and at least grab some of those books on my list. The first book is Tattoo Art & Design, which is honestly, hardly in relation to tattoo artists or designers. The great thing about the book is not only the outstanding illustration that fills every page, but the long list of Victionary supported artists and designers. Some of these peeps include our good friends, inspirers and illustrative masterminds, i.e. EightHourDay, 123KLAN, Rolitoland, Rinzen, Superdeux, Pulco Mayo, Simon Oxley and a ton more. The second book is something of a jewel. Steve Powers. ESPO. That’s all I should really have to say. More than 100 pages of Powers amazing type work coupled with his hand painted illustration style. Pretty rad.
Bastardised

A great new book by Bunch entitled, “Bastardised” featuring my very talented wife, business partner and cohort, Celeste. Out of 750 contributors to the project, Celeste’s design was chosen to be published in the book. For more information on the project or to buy the book check out the Made in Bunch site.
Behind The Candidates

Behind The Candidates is a slick and simple interface that gives a quick and concise peek into those running and shaping the administrations on both sides of the ticket. These are the people that will be guiding our next President along with our future.
T.V. Worth Watching / Info Worth Sharing

I apologize for letting everyone marinate in the last post for the last few days. I had the intent of putting something else up after and never made it happen. So, to change the mood and share some happy fun cheery informationally splendid content, I offer you a peek into Current TV. Chances are the more “hip” and aware portion of you all have been reading and watching this for a while now. I finally just had the blessed experience of catching my first episodes last week. I DO NOT like television for the most part. I think it’s terribly useless and dramatically out dated in its content and its format. These were my glum emotions towards it about a week ago, I now can be proud to say, some friends (Tran & Josh) shared their T.V. and couch long enough to share this wondrous broadcast treat. It showed me that there is hope for television as a device to share information and offer people a chance to be involved. The show is comprised of mostly user generated content and gives viewers less shit and more info. It’s almost set up like a series of short infomercials or documentaries. Some of what is aired is chosen by viewers and other, by the producers. It puts television back in the hands of the intent and caring public, without bashing you in the face with subliminal corporate bias. There is also a really good website that goes along with the whole scheme as well. Make sure to check ‘em both out, share what you like, and maybe what you don’t like. I like it, maybe you will too?
Don’t forget, it’s just as much our responsibility to write, as it is your’s to participate in our blog (along with any other) in the form of comments and discussion. It’s what separates involved and productive citizens from evil consumers…
Oh you can find the times and channels the broadcasts air, on the website.
Eight Things I Think I Think
An interesting thought, find more here.
Google rank will become a political argument. Instead of saying “this is why I am right” political leaders will say “type ‘Iraq war’ in google and look at how my speech comes up first”. Google will be perceived as the ultimate organizer of relevance, and as nobody can control it it will provide the needed crowdibility (that’s a new word I just made up) politicians have lost. If you are on top of google you are right, and you are right because the population put you there.
Get Smart

I like to read, I especially like to learn. Using that as a sort of mantra for the day, I would like to offer you a suggested text. The book is called “Type Addicted” the publisher is Viction:ary. If you don’t know who Viction:ary is, you should check em out. They have released maybe the most comprehensive selection of design related books I have yet to come across. This book is one of their newest released and offers a ton of rad typography related info and imagery. Yup thats right, even if you don’t read, you can still look at the pretty pictures. And remember, the smarter you are, the smarter we all are… not only as human beings but as designers and artists alike. So raise the bar and pick up their new book if you get the chance.
Obey The Giant : Life In The IMAGE World

If you ever run across this book… snag that shit! I came across a copy at the DPL a few weeks back, read it and loved it. It’s a compilation of objective essays on various design related topics put together by design author and critic Rick Poynor. All of the essays are quick and to the point… the author does a nice job of putting the subject into context and then firing off.
I didn’t agree with all of the opinions presented within, but the book definitely offered new lenses to view the world through. Especially as it relates to our roles and responsibilities as creative professionals, the impact we have on our society, culture, and every day state of being.
Reads.

Some books to add to your reading list:
1. Micheal Bierut’s Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design
2. Adrian Shaughnessy’s How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul
3. and of course the always fantastic read, GOOD magazine.
If you didn’t know about these, you better act like you know and get your ass over to your local bookstore or borrow them from the library. If your in the Denver area, head over to the b&n on Colorado. They have by far the best selection of design books I’ve come across to date.
